Description

Celebrate Halloween with these adorable and spooky skeleton cupcakes! A simple vanilla cupcake topped with creamy vanilla frosting and decorated to look like a cute skeleton face.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black edible food marker

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, vanilla extract, and milk.
  5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the cupcakes cool, prepare the frosting: In a medium bowl, beat together powdered sugar, softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  9. Once cupcakes are completely cool, frost them generously.
  10. Use a black edible food marker to draw two small circles for eyes, an upside-down triangle for a nose, and a curved line for a mouth on each frosted cupcake to create a skeleton face.

Notes

  • For a chocolate version, substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for 1/4 cup of the flour.
  • Make sure your butter is truly softened for the best frosting texture.
  • You can use black icing in a piping bag with a small round tip instead of an edible marker for a more defined skeleton face.
