Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- Royal icing (store-bought or homemade)
- Halloween-themed food coloring
- Assorted Halloween sprinkles and edible decorations
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract and almond extract (if using).
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut out desired Halloween shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets, about 1 inch apart.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare royal icing according to package directions or your recipe. Divide the icing into bowls and tint with Halloween-themed food coloring.
- Once cookies are completely cool, decorate with the colored royal icing. Use piping bags or spatulas to apply icing.
- Add sprinkles and edible decorations while the icing is still wet.
- Allow icing to dry completely before storing or serving.
Notes
- For crispier cookies, bake for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Store decorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
- Get creative with your decorations! Use different colors, patterns, and edible glitter for unique designs.
- Consider making a cookie decorating kit for a fun party activity.
