Description

These adorable black cat cookies are a fun and festive treat for Halloween or any cat-lover’s celebration. They’re surprisingly easy to make with simple ingredients and a touch of creativity.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black food coloring
  • For Decorating: Black icing, edible googly eyes, white icing (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the dough into two portions. Leave one portion plain and tint the other with black food coloring until a deep black color is achieved.
  6. Wrap each portion of dough separately in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the black dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut out cat shapes using a cookie cutter.
  9. Roll out the plain dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut out smaller ear shapes to attach to the top of the cat heads.
  10. Carefully place the cookies onto the prepared baking sheets.
  11. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  12. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  13. Once cooled, decorate the black cat cookies with black icing for outlines, add edible googly eyes, and any other desired details.

Notes

  • For sharper cookie shapes, chill the cut-out dough for another 15-20 minutes before baking.
  • If you don’t have a cat-shaped cookie cutter, you can freehand cut simple cat shapes.
  • Experiment with different decorating techniques for unique cat faces.
