Description

This classic strawberry trifle is a show-stopping dessert that’s surprisingly easy to make. Layers of sponge cake, creamy custard, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream combine to create a delicious and beautiful treat that’s perfect for parties, gatherings, or a special weeknight dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 store-bought pound cake (or angel food cake), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup strawberry liqueur (optional)
  • 2 cups prepared custard (or instant custard mix prepared according to package directions)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Strawberries: In a bowl, combine the sliced strawberries and granulated sugar. Let them macerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, until they release their juices. If using, add the strawberry liqueur.
  2. Assemble the Trifle: In a large glass trifle bowl or individual serving dishes, begin layering the ingredients. Start with a layer of cake cubes.
  3. Add Strawberries: Spoon a layer of the macerated strawberries over the cake.
  4. Layer Custard: Pour a layer of custard over the strawberries.
  5. Whip the Cream: In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  6. Top with Whipped Cream: Spread a layer of whipped cream over the custard.
  7. Repeat Layers: Repeat the layers of cake, strawberries, custard, and whipped cream until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of whipped cream on top.
  8. Chill and Serve: Cover the trifle and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Before serving, you can garnish with extra sliced strawberries.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use homemade custard.
  • Feel free to substitute other berries, such as raspberries or blueberries.
  • If you don’t have strawberry liqueur, you can use a splash of orange juice or simply omit it.
  • The trifle can be made a day in advance, making it perfect for entertaining.
