Instructions
- Prepare the Cake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
- In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, red food coloring, and vinegar.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until combined. Stir in vanilla and salt.
- Assemble the Flag Cake: Once the cake is completely cool, frost the top with cream cheese frosting.
- Arrange sliced strawberries to form red stripes and blueberries in the upper left corner to represent the stars of the flag.
