Description

This classic Red Velvet Cake recipe yields a moist, tender cake with a delightful tang, perfect for any celebration. The subtle chocolate flavor combined with the creamy cream cheese frosting is simply irresistible.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons red food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, eggs, red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  9. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until well combined.
  10. Stir in vanilla extract.
  11. Once the cakes are completely cool, level the tops if necessary. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and frost with a generous amount of frosting. Top with the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  12. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a deeper red color, you can add a bit more food coloring.
  • Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature for the best results.
  • You can make cupcakes instead of a cake; reduce the baking time to 18-20 minutes.
  • Store leftover cake in the refrigerator.
