Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, eggs, red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until well combined.
