Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for strawberries)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  6. In a separate bowl, toss sliced strawberries with 1/4 cup sugar.
  7. Arrange strawberries over the batter.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out with moist crumbs.
  9. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. In a small saucepan, heat heavy cream until simmering. Pour over the cake and strawberries.
