- 1 package (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
- 4 medium apples, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the diced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, and water. Mix well and let the mixture sit for 15 minutes, allowing the apples to soften slightly.
- On a lightly floured surface, unfold one pie crust. Use a round cookie cutter (about 4 inches in diameter) or a knife to cut out circles. You should get about 6-8 circles per crust.
- Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of half of the circles.
- Top each apple-filled circle with another circle of pie crust. Use your fingers or a fork to crimp the edges tightly to seal the pies.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place a few apple pies in the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the fried apple pies with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Let the pies cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar, if desired. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a spicier filling, add a pinch of ground cloves or a dash of allspice.
- You can also use store-bought apple pie filling to save time.
- If the edges of the pies don’t seal properly, brush them with a little water before crimping.
