- For Decoration (Optional):

Instructions
- Make the Cake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Gradually add boiling water, mixing until combined. The batter will be thin.
- Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the Chocolate Buttercream: In a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the milk or cream, beating until smooth and creamy.
- Stir in vanilla extract.
- Make the Chocolate Ganache: Heat heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
- Remove from heat and pour over chopped chocolate. Let stand for 1 minute, then whisk until smooth and glossy.
- Assemble the Cake: Level the cakes with a serrated knife if needed. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
- Spread a generous layer of buttercream on top. Top with the second cake layer.
- Frost the entire cake with the remaining buttercream.
- Create the Drip: Let the ganache cool slightly until it thickens but is still pourable.
- Pour the ganache over the edges of the cake, letting it drip down the sides.
- Decorate: Immediately decorate the top of the cake with candies and sprinkles.
- Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes to allow the ganache to set.
- Slice and serve!
Notes
- For a richer cake, use dark cocoa powder.
- Don’t overbake the cake; it should still be slightly moist.
- If the ganache is too thick, gently warm it in the microwave in short bursts.
- Get creative with the decorations! Use his favorite candies, cookies, or even a personalized cake topper.
