- 1 box (15.25 ounces) chocolate cake mix
- Ingredients listed on the cake mix box (usually eggs, oil, and water)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Optional toppings: sprinkles, cocoa powder, chopped nuts, shredded coconut
Instructions
- Bake the chocolate cake according to the package directions. Let the cake cool completely.
- Once cooled, crumble the cake into a large bowl.
- In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it simmers.
- Remove the cream from the heat and pour it over the chocolate chips. Let it sit for 1 minute, then stir until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth (ganache).
- Pour about half of the ganache over the crumbled cake. Mix until well combined. You may not need all the ganache, add more until it holds together.
- Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Refrigerate the truffle balls for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
- While the truffle balls are chilling, prepare your optional toppings.
- Once the truffle balls are firm, dip them in the remaining ganache (you can re-melt if needed) or roll them in your chosen toppings.
- Return the truffle balls to the baking sheet and refrigerate for another 30 minutes to allow the coating to set.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips.
- You can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the ganache for extra flavor.
- These truffle balls can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
