Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Gradually add boiling water, mixing until combined. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Make the Chocolate Buttercream: In a large bowl, beat butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, until combined. Stir in vanilla and salt.
  8. Level the cakes if needed. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread with a generous layer of buttercream. Top with the second cake layer and frost the entire cake with the remaining buttercream.
  9. Decorate with fresh berries, chocolate shavings, edible flowers, and birthday candles as desired.
