Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Gradually add boiling water, mixing until combined. The batter will be thin.
- Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the Chocolate Buttercream: In a large bowl, beat butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, until combined. Stir in vanilla and salt.
- Level the cakes if needed. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread with a generous layer of buttercream. Top with the second cake layer and frost the entire cake with the remaining buttercream.
- Decorate with fresh berries, chocolate shavings, edible flowers, and birthday candles as desired.
