- 3 cups powdered sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
- Prepare the Cake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Gradually add boiling water, mixing until combined. The batter will be thin.
- Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, until frosting is smooth and creamy. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of frosting on top. Top with the second cake layer.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
- Decorate with sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or fresh berries, as desired.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
- You can make this cake ahead of time. Wrap the frosted cake tightly and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- Adjust the sweetness of the frosting to your liking by adding more or less powdered sugar.
