Ingredients
Scale
- 1 batch of your favorite chocolate cake (baked and cooled)
- Chocolate frosting (recipe below)
- Sprinkles
- Chocolate shavings
- Fresh berries (optional)
- Candles
Instructions
- Prepare the Chocolate Frosting: In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened, and 3 cups powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/4 cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and creamy.
- Frost the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting on top. Repeat with the remaining layers, stacking them on top of each other.
- Frost the Outside: Use a spatula or offset spatula to frost the entire cake with the remaining frosting. Start with a thin crumb coat to seal in the crumbs, then apply a thicker layer for a smooth finish.
- Add Decorations: Immediately sprinkle the sides and top of the cake with sprinkles. Arrange chocolate shavings and fresh berries (if using) around the edges of the cake.
- Add Candles: Place candles on top of the cake.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes to allow the frosting to set. Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- For a smoother frosting, sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder before adding them to the butter.
- If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
- Get creative with your decorations! Use different types of sprinkles, candies, or even edible flowers.
