Description

This Caramel Apple Cake is a moist and tender cake filled with chunks of fresh apple and swirled with rich caramel. Perfect for fall baking or any time you crave a comforting dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup chopped fresh apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • ½ cup caramel sauce, plus more for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the applesauce, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Gently fold in the chopped apples.
  7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Dollop half of the caramel sauce over the batter. Swirl gently with a knife.
  8. Pour the remaining batter over the caramel layer. Dollop the remaining caramel sauce on top and swirl again.
  9. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Drizzle with additional caramel sauce before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • For an extra burst of apple flavor, you can peel the apples before chopping, but it’s not essential.
  • Ensure your caramel sauce is not too thin, or it might sink to the bottom of the cake.
  • This cake is delicious served warm or at room temperature.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
