Description

A classic apple upside-down cake with a rich, buttery caramel topping and tender, spiced apple slices. Perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Topping:
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 2 large apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • For the Cake:
  • 1 1/2 cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. For the topping: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 cup of sugar until it turns an amber caramel color. Carefully stir in the butter until melted and combined. Pour this caramel mixture into the prepared cake pan and spread evenly.
  3. Arrange the apple slices decoratively over the caramel in the pan.
  4. For the cake: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter evenly over the apples in the cake pan.
  8. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a serving plate. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Ensure apples are sliced evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
  • If you don’t have milk, buttermilk or even plain yogurt can be substituted.
