Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large apples, such as Granny Smith or Braeburn, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Custard for serving (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cubed butter, and salt. Use your fingers or a pastry blender to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into a baking dish (about 8×8 inches).
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Let the crumble cool slightly before serving.
  8. Serve warm with custard.

Notes

  • For a crispier topping, you can add a small amount of chopped nuts to the crumble mixture.
  • If using frozen apples, thaw them slightly before using.
  • You can make the crumble topping ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.
