Indulge in these delightful Apple Crumble Bars, a perfect blend of tender, spiced apples nestled between a buttery shortbread base and a crunchy crumble topping. Easy to make and incredibly satisfying!
Ingredients
Scale
- For the Base and Crumble:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- For the Apple Filling:
- 4 cups peeled, cored, and diced tart apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground allspice
Instructions
- Prepare the Base and Crumble: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter. Using a pastry blender, your fingertips, or a food processor, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Press about two-thirds of this mixture evenly into the bottom of an ungreased 9×13 inch baking pan. Reserve the remaining one-third for the topping.
- Prepare the Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, toss the diced apples with granulated sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and allspice until well combined.
- Spread the apple filling evenly over the pressed base in the baking pan.
- Crumble the reserved one-third of the dough mixture evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake: Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares. This allows the filling to set properly.
Notes
- For an extra crunch, you can add ½ cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble topping mixture.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra decadent treat.
- Store cooled bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for longer storage.
