Description

Indulge in these delightful Apple Crumble Bars, a perfect blend of tender, spiced apples nestled between a buttery shortbread base and a crunchy crumble topping. Easy to make and incredibly satisfying!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Base and Crumble:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • For the Apple Filling:
  • 4 cups peeled, cored, and diced tart apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Base and Crumble: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter. Using a pastry blender, your fingertips, or a food processor, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Press about two-thirds of this mixture evenly into the bottom of an ungreased 9×13 inch baking pan. Reserve the remaining one-third for the topping.
  3. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, toss the diced apples with granulated sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and allspice until well combined.
  4. Spread the apple filling evenly over the pressed base in the baking pan.
  5. Crumble the reserved one-third of the dough mixture evenly over the apple filling.
  6. Bake: Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  7. Cool and Serve: Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares. This allows the filling to set properly.

Notes

  • For an extra crunch, you can add ½ cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble topping mixture.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra decadent treat.
  • Store cooled bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for longer storage.
