Description

A classic and comforting apple crisp recipe with a perfectly spiced, crumbly topping. Easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (about 2.5 lbs), peeled, cored, and sliced (Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala work well)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie plate or an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Add the cold butter cubes to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips, a pastry blender, or a fork, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  5. Spread the apple slices evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Crumble the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  7. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  8. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • For a richer topping, you can add 1/4 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts.
  • If your apples are very tart, you can add an extra tablespoon of sugar to the apple mixture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave.
