Description

These festive 4th of July sugar cookies are the perfect treat for your Independence Day celebration. They’re easy to make, beautifully decorated, and sure to impress your guests!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles
  • Royal icing (recipe below)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the vanilla and almond extract (if using), then the egg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Divide the dough in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Cut out shapes using star, flag, or other patriotic cookie cutters.
  9. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Decorate with royal icing and sprinkles.

Notes

  • For the royal icing: In a bowl, whisk together 3 cups powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons meringue powder, and 6 tablespoons water. Add more water, a teaspoon at a time, until the icing reaches your desired consistency. Divide and color with red and blue food coloring.
  • If you don’t have time to make royal icing, you can use store-bought frosting.
  • Get creative with your decorating! Use different sprinkles, food coloring, and piping techniques.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
